After his retirement in 1946, Mr. Boughton worked with the state retired teachers. He was elected its president in 1952, and he was instrumental in founding the Allegany County Teachers Association in 1903. |

Dr. Charles L. Kopp
1959 – 1961
Allegany County
As MRTA president, Dr. Kopp authorized two delegates (Miss Myrtle Eckhardt and Dr. Lillian Compton) to attend the NRTA Convention in St. Louis with a $150 stipend each to help defray their expenses. On October 21, 1960, the name of the association was officially changed to the Maryland Retired Teachers Association.

Mr. Ivan C. Diehl
1972 – 1973
Allegany County
The first large convention in Ocean City was held in 1972 during Mr. Diehl’s presidency. During his tenure at Frostburg, the college changed gradually from a two-year Normal School to a four-year Teachers College. |

Mr. James G. Neilson, Jr.
1983 – 1984
Allegany County
Following his retirement, Mr. Neilson worked with the Retired Teachers of Allegany County of the issues affecting education retirees. He served as president of the Allegany County group and served on MRTA’s state legislative committee, representing the Western Region of Maryland.
During his presidency of MRTA, he worked to build a closer bond between Maryland and the national associations. He devoted most of MRTA’s fall convention to speakers from AARP and NRTA. His efforts were very successful. |
